Perfect Products

When you are having a lupus flare resulting with a skin rash, it's daunting to decide what to put on it to calm the redness and stop the itching. With the help of my fabulous dermatologist, I've figured out what things I can't live without during a Lupus flare:

  • Eucerin Skin Calming- the body wash and the lotion both contain castor oil which draws out impurities
  •  Mixing Calamine lotion with coconut oil- the Calamine contains healing zinc and coconut oil is both moisturizing and anti-bacterial plus it smells fabulous!
  • Epsom salt lotion for creaky joints
  • Ice packs and Benedryl
  • Turmeric tea + Curcumin oral supplements because they are a very powerful anti-inflammatory
  • Apple Cider Vinegar- I drink a few table spoons a day and I put it in my bath to restore my skin pH balance - it can also be used as a toner 1:1 with water...beware of the smell, to say it's stinky is an understatement!

Plaquenil Update:

{ photo taken before starting Plaquenil }
The reason I started this blog is because after doing hours of research, I could not find any resources from actual lupus patients about their personal experiences with rashes, medications and natural remedies. So I made my own in hopes to help others out there and give them peace of mind in times of flares. I'm willing to share unflattering photos of myself with my rash to show my progress. So here we go... After a month of a discoid flare, I tried prednisone but that seemed to make things worse by the day. First starting as a small red patch on my chest to full blown red raised hives spreading all over my body. The prednisone not only made me starving thus causing me to gain ten pounds, it also made me completely depressed and extremely anxious. So, after weening off steroids, I started Plaquenil (anti malaria meds) on August 5th along with vistaril to reduce itching. After 11 days on this new medicine, I can really notice much improvement in my rash! It is more brown, not bright red. It has completely disappeared from my neck and face and although it is still all over my legs, my hands and arms are improving everyday! So far this medication gets two thumbs up from me as I have not experienced any side effects as of yet. I'm still on my daily turmeric powder as well as magnesium pills and lotion. I've slowly discontinued my steroid ointment and replaced it with soothing oatmeal lotion which seems to be working as well. Hope this review helps and I'll keep updating my progress. Stay strong Spoonies!!!!!
Before & Now:

Raynauds Syndrome

When you have Lupus, one of the unfortunate symptoms is Raynauds Syndrome where your blood has a hard time flowing to your extremities, leaving your feet and hands blue at times. Although I am personally blessed that this symptom has not affected me, one of my best friends, who was recently diagnosed with lupus, has suffered from this for years. Since she lives in California, she never takes her doctor's advice to wear boots and continues to rock flip flops year round. If anyone has any helpful information on natural remedies or medications that work, please leave comments below!

Bon Soir!

In the last year, I've developed problems sleeping. As an anxious person, if I have ANY additional stress, it keeps me awake at night. Or if I do fall asleep, I often have nightmares about whatever is troubling me and I wake up sometimes up to ten times a night, then having to try to fall back asleep is frustrating. I feel like I cant get into that deep sleep that lets your body heal and your emotions and thoughts you've had throughout the day disperse. I had recently had a rough couple of weeks, so I turned to a psychiatrist who prescribed me RX sleeping pills. They did not work. I started taking them earlier in the evening, thinking that maybe my metabolism was slow and I should give them time to kick in. That did not help. I'm just one of those people that doesn't respond to sleeping pills. I tried binaural beats with a sleep app on my iPad, but falling asleep with headphones on is uncomfortable to say the least. I still fall asleep to guided relaxation meditations I find on youtube, but I've FINALLY found something else that helps me sleep throughout the night naturally. Transdermal, or topical, magnesium has benefits such as relaxation, help sleeping, stress reduction and improved moods. Research shows that the American diet is very deficient in magnesium, but taking it orally can upset your stomach as it acts as a laxative. Applying it therapeutically as an oil on the skin helps it absorb into the cells more efficiently. Magnesium allows muscles to relax and decreases the discomforts of muscle cramping. It is known as the anti stress mineral. It is a natural tranquilizer, even used by some as a deodorant because it relaxes your arm pit glands that produce sweat. For sleep, I put it on my feet, then I add a few drops of jojoba oil and put socks on. I've had the best sleep in my life and it's much needed for me because if I don't get enough sleep I look horrible and my lupus symptoms increase. Hope this helps you, sleeping beauty!

Kale Yeah!

The easiest recipe ever! Tear kale in chip size pieces, put a small amount of olive oil on your hands and toss the kale to get a bit on every piece. Put on a baking sheet lined with tin foil, add a pinch of salt, minced garlic and parmesian then pop in the oven at 375 degrees until desired crispiness. I usually find it takes about 15 minutes and sometimes I take them out half way through and move them around so they all get crispy. Toss them in a bowl and sprinkle a bit of lemon juice on them and bon apetit!

Anti Inflammatory Help:

This blog is supposed to help people in ways that I know how. Since I have Discoid Lupus (skin Lupus) I am always looking for ways to keep my immune system up and recently I unfortunately have had a lupus flare up from a few days in the sun (I know, tisk tisk) resulting in a rash on pretty much my entire body... I've been discovering and experimenting with homeopathic remedies for rashes. The hundred plus degree heat in Arizona doesn't help, so I've been learning to rest inside and relax. I've been drinking Turmeric tea a few times daily, as it's said that it is as powerfully anti inflammatory as NSAIDs. I'm also on steroids by my rheumatologists so please use my advice along with your doctor! I also got the Daily Turmeric Nutrient Booster Powder by Mega Food and have been taking it orally and also using the powder to create a lotion mixed with aloe vera gel. I leave it on for an hour or so then rinse it off in the shower...this does make you yellow and smell like curry! But the aloe lessens the itch and the turmeric soothes the redness. I will post photos and more helpful tips with living with lupus soon! Click here to read an interesting article on turmeric's healing properties.
